Prompt: http://siobhanmuir.blogspot.com/2013/02/thursthreads-challenge-that-ties-tales.html

He showed them into his cabin and introduced himself as Walter, a scientist and inventor. The cabin was warm, but not stuffy, and the stew smelled deep and rich and herbaceous. He asked them where they’d come from, and they talked of everything they’d seen since they’d Flickered to this time – the deserted cities, abundant wildlife, and a planet that seemed to be doing everything in its power to erase all signs that human civilization had ever existed.

While they’d talked, Walter had begun serving up stew into bowls. As he set the food on the table, he shook his head sorrowfully. “There’s a lot there that didn’t used to be. A war, you know – or maybe you don’t – a war different than other wars, and certainly the last of its kind. Or maybe any kind.

“Come, eat. And please – I am so curious. Can you tell me about your homes? Where you’ve been? What kind of adventures has my umbrella taken you on?”
